History and Background
ETOP, founded 2009, had become one of the leading European organizations performing international clinical and translational research in thoracic malignancies and was initiated in response to concerns raised by European lung cancer investigators, expressing the need to better promote and conduct academic clinical research across borders in Europe. The group structure was built on the model of the International Breast Cancer Study Group. ETOP, a not-for-profit foundation was able to draw on the expertise and support of the IBCSG Coordinating Center in Berne.
IBCSG was formed in 1977 as the “Ludwig Breast Cancer Study Group”. When the Ludwig Institute of Cancer Research decided in 1985 to focus on laboratory research, the Group continued with a new name and structure - the International Breast Cancer Study Group (IBCSG). It was legally established as a not-for-profit foundation in 1992. IBCSG and its investigators are renowned for their clinical and translational research in breast cancer. In particular, the group pioneered the research in combined hormone- and chemotherapy, timing and duration of adjuvant therapies, as well as improvement of quality of life. IBCSG stands for a number of practice-changing studies in the breast cancer field.
The legal seat of both foundations was Berne, Switzerland.

ETOP IBCSG Partners Foundation brings together two of the leading recognized and reputable innovators in clinical and translational cancer research, strengthening the position as an international academic research organization through broadened competency, synergy, sustainability as well as the reduction of overhead.
Both partners share matching missions and top-level scientific objectives which secure the future success as well as the vision of expansion, both geographically and with regard to the research area.

Coordinating Center
The Coordinating Center (CC) situated in Berne, Switzerland is the headquarters of ETOP IBCSG Partners Foundation.
We provide high quality support and prime operational know-how for all aspects of clinical trial conduct and translational research. Through close cooperation with our vast academic network and partners, we aim to facilitate collaboration in the field of clinical and translational cancer research.
Our CC team is responsible for both the overall coordination as well as for specialized tasks such as: Safety and Regulatory, Pharmacovigilance, Drug Supply, Medical Expertise, Translational Research coordination, Qualify of Life, Monitoring, Quality Assurance and Audits, Program for Young Patients and Group Administration. For thoracic trials, we also maintain Project and Data Management.
In addition, ETOP IBCSG Partners Foundation benefits from the proficiency of the Frontier Science Foundation in Greece and the U.S. to bring together all the expertise needed in order to develop and coordinate clinical and translational research at the international level.

Frontier Science Foundation-Hellas (FSF-H), serves as ETOP’s statistical center, since 2011. FSF-H, incorporated in Athens, Greece, is a non-profit research organization, aiming to promote statistics in oncology through collaborative research in clinical trials, education and training of health scientists. The Board of FSF-H includes recognized leaders in the field of Biostatistics, and is chaired by Professor Rich Gelber (Harvard School of Public Health). It was co-founded by the renowned Harvard Biostatistics Professors Marvin Zelen and Steve Lagakos, and is directed by Professor Urania Dafni (National and Kapodistrian University of Athens). The current statistical team consists of ten scientists holding post-graduate degrees in Biostatistics, and/or a Doctorate. Biostatistical expertise is provided from conception and design to dissemination of results, in all ETOP Clinical Trials as well as in translational research projects within the Lungscape and Mesoscape platforms.

The IBCSG Statistical and Data Management Center (SDMC), is located at Frontier Science Technology and Research Foundation (FSTRF), Amherst, NY, USA, and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI) Department of Data Science, Boston, MA, USA.
Frontier Science is a not-for-profit organization founded in 1975 with an international reputation as an innovative and highly-capable data management and statistical organization, collaborating with research networks, pharmaceutical companies and others in the design, conduct and execution of clinical trials in cancer and other disease settings throughout the world. Frontier Science and statisticians at DFCI have closely collaborated since the founding of IBCSG in 1977.
The IBCSG SDMC oversees data collection, processing and management; documentation development; trial activation and coordination; technical support and training for Participating Centers/Cooperative Groups; statistical design and analysis; and scientific coordination of research dissemination.
